SEMH Interventions
Social, Emotional and Mental Health interventions are a great way to support a child to learn to regulate their emotions, develop social skills and learn coping strategies which will support their overall wellbeing.
This can make a positive impact on academic performance, and I am happy to liaise with teachers after each session so that the work and strategies can be continued and the child is further supported after each session.
The sessions will be 1 hour long, which is broken down into a 10 minute check in and “warm up” activity, 25 minutes focussing on the session plan, 10 minutes relaxation to be prepared to return to class and then 15 minutes feedback to either class teacher or SENCO, which will include practical strategies and advice that can be used in class to support meeting the needs of the child.
If you are a school or a parent who would like to access the services privately, please email me to discuss further and to find out availability.
The following interventions are provided and personalised plans can also be devised, based on the child’s individual needs and through discussion with the school.
Zones of Regulation develops self-awareness within children as they learn to recognise their own feelings, talk about them and learn strategies to manage them. Each child will be provided with their own personalised chart of the zones, which will have strategies that are discussed in the sessions and then put into practice in the classroom. Copies can be sent home so that they can be used at home also.
With the 5-point scale, children learn to self-regulate using a scale that is broken down into 5 levels of intensity. It supports children to recognise how they are feeling in the moment and gives practical strategies to regulate. Each child will be provided with a personalised scale that they have helped to design, which has strategies specific for them.
Anger can be a huge challenge to manage, and this intervention teaches children to recognise their triggers and to make a plan with strategies they can use both at school and home, to express themselves in healthy and safe ways. Each child will finish the sessions with a personalised booklet that they can refer to as much as needed.
These sessions teach children to recognise some of the causes of anxiety and the coping strategies they could use when feeling anxious. It is a safe place to talk and explore the feeling. Each child will finish the sessions with a personalised plan made into a booklet that they can refer to as often as needed.
Since self-esteem and resilience are closely linked, this intervention looks at creating a positive self-view and confidence. Confidence can lead to trying new things and facing challenges without fear of failure, along with having the ability to bounce back following a setback.
This group looks at learning the skills needed to have positive interactions with peers and develops social skills to thrive in group activities and build a sense of belonging. By the end of the sessions, the children will be practicing and role-playing scenarios to build their confidence in situations.
Play leader training can have a really positive impact on play times and how children interact with one another, opening further opportunities to develop social skills. Children who are selected for play leaders are taught the skills and ideas to lead engaging play with children of all ages throughout the school. Children will learn about communication, organisation and leadership. It is great to ensure play times are more enriching and with the help of play leaders on the playground, playtimes can be managed better and more children actively joining in.
This is for children who have a diagnosis of ADHD, Autism, Dyspraxia, or Dyslexia and would like to learn more about it, the way the brain works and all of the positive things they can still do with a Neurodivergent brain. It supports children to understand, accept and realise that they are worthy of being a part of society and that they aren’t someone who needs to be “fixed” but rather to learn and understand how to manage the more challenging traits, through personalised strategies for them.
